Folklore

The Legend of Zhong Kui

While official history holds no record of Zhong Kui, his heroic image as a demon slayer lives deeply in the hearts of the people.

Death of the Scholar

Legend has it that Zhong Kui was a top scholar in the Tang Dynasty. However, during his audience with the Emperor, he was rejected and expelled due to his disfigured appearance. In a fit of rage, Zhong Kui took his own life by crashing into the palace pillars.

The Demon Slayer

After his death, the palace was plagued by strange occurrences. The Emperor dreamt of a ghost attacking him, only to be saved by Zhong Kui. The Emperor then posthumously titled him the 'Demon Quelling Judge', charged with driving away evil spirits.

The King of Ghosts

Later, the King of Hell also appointed him as the 'Great Marshal of Demon Slaying', granting him a bronze sword and commanding him to roam the world, slaying demons and upholding justice.

Confusion and Decision

For a long time after the release of 'Black Myth: Wukong', I was in a daze...

Six months after launch, we had set some directions and the team was officially running on the plan to 'make the DLC first'.

A New Beginning

Until one day this year, Yang Qi messaged me... We hit it off instantly.

A DLC is certainly not a bad choice, but at this moment, we want to make a new Black Myth game first—
New hero, new gameplay, new visuals, new tech, new story.
Starting from scratch, bold and unconstrained.

To Our Players

Like you, I love the world of demons and gods in Journey to the West. The legend of Wukong will return in the future in a more complete and solid way.

As Nintendo's late president Satoru Iwata said: 'On the extension of the existing, there is no future.'
Only with the unknown comes surprise; only with challenge comes fun.

Zhong Kui is the god of exorcism in traditional Chinese culture... A symbol of warding off evil and punishing vice.

Changing the mindset to get excited about creation again is better for the team than just churning out DLC.

Some say he became a judge, some say he slays demons... But the story I'm about to tell, you've definitely never heard...

Gameplay details?

Hard to say now... we haven't even finished the outline. But the team is eager to tell a new story and add new fun.
